Rockstar Games is once again facing criticism from its own workforce after members of the Rockstar Game Workers Union accused the studio of ignoring pay inequity, relying on crunch, and weaponizing bonuses.

The interview comes after a turbulent period for Rockstar. In recent months, there have been rumors that Rockstar employees could strike before GTA 6 launches . Those tensions followed layoffs in late October, when more than 30 staff members were dismissed , prompting the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain to accuse the company of “union-busting .”

One of the biggest complaints raised centered on Rockstar’s bonus system, which employees claim is “disappointing” and has a major impact on their annual income.

“When the bonus is particularly good, it can be a windfall, but often the bonus is disappointing, and one can end up being paid considerably less than expected for the year. The reasoning given for this is often nebulous, inconsistent between departments, even inconsistent between team members within the same department, and sometimes hinges on completely subjective or retroactive criticisms.”

Rather than criticizing bonuses themselves, the employees argued that the issue is how they’re determined. According to the union members, staff are often left without a clear explanation for why payouts differ: “The main problem is that [bonuses and progression are] all completely discretionary for the company, and they are under no obligation to show their working.”

The workers also claimed that some employees remain “woefully underpaid for their effort and the incredible profits gained,” arguing that career progression and compensation are ultimately controlled by management without transparent criteria.

What’s more, one employee highlighted their approach to overtime, claiming: “It seems the company thinks that offering specific and limited compensation as an incentive for overtime means it no longer qualifies as crunch.”

They also pointed to employment contracts, saying: “Crunch is prevalent enough that the company built into our contracts, as standard, an opt-out of the Working Time Regulations that stops your employer being able to ask you to do more than about 10 hours extra each week.”

They concluded by pointing to what they described as tangible improvements since the union’s formation.

“Since October, there have been unprecedented average wage increases in represented studios; for the first time ever, there is actually some financial incentive for crunch, and several other policies are changing after years of frustration. The timing is not coincidental. Organizing works.”

According to the employees, those changes demonstrate that unionization has already had an impact on pay and workplace policies, even as they continue pushing for greater transparency around compensation, progression, and working conditions.
