Rams that refused to mate with female ewes have been given a second chance after a German farmer stepped in to save them from slaughter, building a sanctuary specifically for homosexual sheep.
While it might sound like the setup to a joke, the project has a genuinely wholesome goal. Instead of being slaughtered because they aren't considered profitable for breeding, these rams are saved and given a permanent home where they can live out their lives in peace.
German farmer Michael Stücke founded Rainbow Wool in 2023 after learning what often happens to rams that show no interest in mating with ewes. Due to their lack of profit in regard to breeding, many of them are simply slaughtered. Rather than accepting that fate, he decided to create a sanctuary where those animals could thrive instead.
German farmer is rescuing homosexual sheep from slaughter
According to Stücke, in an interview with People, a ram that refuses to breed isn't considered commercially useful, meaning many are ultimately killed. After discovering that homosexuality is a naturally occurring behavior in sheep, he began asking other farmers and hobby breeders to contact him before making that decision, saving them from their fate and creating a gay ram sanctuary.
In fact, it's estimated that around 8% of rams exhibit exclusively homosexual behavior, meaning there are plenty of sheep that fit the criteria and therefore plenty to be rescued by Stücke.
"When we first started, there was a lot of polarizing feedback," Stücke explained. "Some people were saying we're crazy. What's going on But gradually people understood that we are honest about this and we're not faking anything, because every animal that comes to my farm needs to do a test."
To make sure a ram genuinely isn't interested in ewes, the sheep is placed in an enclosure with female sheep during breeding season. If it still refuses to mate, that's considered a strong indication that it's gay. "So then we put him into our herd, and then a lot of action happens, if you know what I mean," Stücke joked. "It's happening really within minutes."
The process might sound unusual, but the outcome is genuinely heartwarming. Rather than being slaughtered for failing to breed, the rescued rams get to spend the rest of their lives in a safe environment with other like-minded sheep.
The project has also gained attention well beyond farming circles. In 2025, Rainbow Wool partnered with Grindr to release a collection of 37 unique knitwear pieces made from yarn spun using the wool from Stücke's rescued flock, helping raise awareness of the sanctuary while supporting its work. It may be one of the most unexpected animal rescue stories around, but for the sheep involved, refusing to follow the flock has ended up saving their lives.45:T12
