Ryanair said the aircraft returned to Thessaloniki after “a passenger window dislodged inflight.”

A witness speaking to Radio Thessaloniki said passengers initially heard a loud bang resembling a tire bursting before oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling and a strong smell filled the cabin.

“The head and shoulders of one passenger were outside the window,” the witness said, adding that the man had fortunately kept his seat belt fastened.

The passenger, reportedly a 61-year-old Serbian man, was prevented from being completely pulled through the opening after his wife grabbed and held onto his legs.

Other nearby passengers then rushed over to help her pull him back inside the cabin. Reports said his upper body was exposed to the freezing slipstream for several minutes during the ordeal.

The man was transported to AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki while suffering from shock, friction burns, and a suspected neck injury. He was expected to undergo further scans to check for fractures.

Ryanair said the aircraft landed normally and that one passenger requested and received medical assistance on the ground. A replacement plane was arranged for the remaining travelers and departed for Memmingen later that morning.
