The curse then appeared to hit Argentina on July 7, when Essie was cheering for Messi’s side against Egypt. Egypt went 2-0 up through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, leaving Argentina on the verge of a major Round of 16 upset.

Trying to reverse the trend, Essie switched sides while Egypt was ahead. “I DONT WANT TO CURSE EGYPT BUT I WANT THEM TO WIN,” she posted, before adding: “my pure heart will reverse the curse.”

It did not work. Argentina pulled one back through Cristian Romero in the 79th minute, Messi equalized in the 83rd, and Enzo Fernandez scored the winner in stoppage time to complete a 3-2 comeback.
