According to Cowboy State Daily , the bison entered the area already agitated, first charging a group of children taking photos before wallowing in dirt near a road. The grandfather and his grandson retreated behind a grove of trees as a precaution when the bison began to stand up again.

A passing pickup truck further agitated the animal, causing it to charge the vehicle before redirecting its aggression toward the trees where the pair were hiding.

The grandson managed to escape, but the six-foot-tall bison chased the grandfather around the trees before hooking him in the hip with its horn and flipping him into the air.

MacLeod stopped filming and charged at the bison to draw its attention away from the injured man, a tactic quickly mirrored by other bystanders. The group’s collective action successfully drove the animal off.

Bystanders performed first aid until Yellowstone EMS arrived. The victim suffered significant injuries to his hips and leg, with his grandson saying he “is not out of the woods yet.”

The attack is the second bison-related incident at Yellowstone this year, following a June 26 incident involving a 12-year-old.

It is not the first close call caught on camera. In 2022, a hiker in Texas went viral after filming herself being charged by a bison after passing too close to the animal on a trail.
