A new location-based running app lets you claim real locations and battle it out with other players to defend and expand your digital empire.
Running is one of the best ways to lose some extra pounds or maintain good overall fitness, but sometimes finding the motivation to go for a jog can be tough.
This is especially true when the weather isn’t great, or during those times when you just want to chill out on the sofa with your favorite video games (couldn't be me).
However, a new fitness app aims to motivate players by turning neighborhoods into a real-world strategy game where every runner battles it out to claim territory.
KYRO: Territory Run Game is basically Civilization, just without the political drama and battles of deception. Instead, all you need to do to expand your empire is go on a run with the app on in the background.
However, before you go sprinting to claim land that is rightfully yours, you have to remember to close the loop on your chosen circuit to lay claim to it. If you happen to see that another runner has already marked your desired location, fear not, as you can simply run around it to steal it from underneath them.
You’ll also be able to keep track of your digital kingdom and other players’ progress by checking the in-game map. There’s even a global and neighborhood leaderboard where you can see the top runners based on their overall territory ownership score.
If you prefer to join up for some jolly cooperation, then there are Pokémon Go-style teams you can make either with friends/family or other runners. By joining a club, you can work together to both expand and defend your territory from other players.
The devs have even said that KYRO: Territory Run Game will have “branded missions”, where real prizes are up for grabs. While we don’t know what these rewards entail, the game’s store page reveals runners will need to claim territory, collect shapes, and grab items.
