Dune: Part Three is happening now through "necessity over nostalgia"

When asked why he wanted to make the third movie straight after Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve explained: "The thing I said to my crew, after Part Two; we did both movies back to back, and I was quite tired, and I said to everybody, 'Listen, I'm taking a break,' and I went back home, and two things happened.

"First of all, I kept waking up in the night and these images started to get stronger and stronger, and also something important I have to say is that as we were touring for Part Two, I felt an appetite, and a joy, and a desire to finish that story, and I felt some new responsibility, and I was planning do Part Three in a few years from now, but I said, 'Would it be a better idea to, instead of going to Arrakis by nostalgia, to go there by necessity?'

"And all these images are coming to my mind right now, and I wrote the movie right away, and here we are, and I'm really excited. Dune Messiah – Dune: Part Three – is based on the second book, and it's one of my favourites, and it was a privilege and an honor to bring it to the screen.

Part Three is the most "emotional" Dune movie yet

Timothée Chalamet appeared onstage alongside Denis Villeneuve.

Villeneuve also elaborated on how the new movie will be different in both genre and tone to what's gone before.

"The thing I said to my crew is I don't want us to walk into our own footsteps," he explained. "I want us to bring the audience to new parts of Arrakis, something that will be fresh and new, and also for people who know the book, it's a very different beast.

"It's more of a thriller. It's a more intense story, and it's definitely more emotional as well. It will be the third and last Dune movie. It's a Dune movie, but it is a very different rhythm."

Timothée Chalamet, appearing onstage with Villeneuve, concurred, adding: "I think the first two were sort of siblings, and then this one is really its own energy, and I love that approach. I thought, wow, it's familiar – this crew, this family – but there's a new tone to this."
