The largest male great white shark ever tagged in the Atlantic Ocean recently reappeared near a bustling East coast tourist destination.

"Contender", named after boat company Contender Boats, is a great white shark that was tagged by OCEARCH in January 2025. It is the largest male great white shark tagged in the Atlantic Ocean.

It measures 13 ft 9 inches (4.2 m) in length and weighs 1653 lbs (750 kg). OCEARCH, a non-profit organisation tracking sharks, tagged it with a device that alerts them to its location whenever it breaches the surface.

The shark appeared near North Carolina's Outer Banks

The shark's tag pinged on Thursday July 16, revealing that the shark was in the waters near the Outer Banks, a series of barrier islands in North Carolina, and a highly popular vacation destination known for its beaches.

Scientists think is evidence of its annual summer migration up the East coast. As per the Independent, a spokesperson for OCEARCH said: “White sharks in the western North Atlantic typically migrate north and spend the summer and early fall foraging in the waters of Cape Cod or Atlantic Canada."

The waters in question are a popular destination for white sharks as they offer ideal water temperatures, along with shoals of large fish species and grey seals for them to prey on.

Contender's tag, which only works if exposed out of the water for a long enough time, is expected to provide OCEARCH with more data about his movements for five years.

"Every ping from Contender gives us a window into the life of a mature male white shark," said Chris Fischer, OCEARCH's founder. "How he moves, feeds and contributes to the population’s recovery."
